Tennis elbow, also known as lateral epicondylitis,
affects the outside of the elbow bone called the lateral epicondyle. Golfers elbow, also known as medial
epicondylitis, affects the inside of the elbow bone called the medial epicondyle. The primary differences between these conditions are the location of the pain and the activity that leads
to injury. However, both conditions are caused by overuse of the muscles and tendons of the forearm, leading to inflammation
and pain around the elbow joint. A range of different
activities that involve repeated hand, wrist and forearm movements can be the cause. These include; - Playing tennis
- Playing
golf
- Using a computer mouse or keyboard
- Using vibrating equipment eg strimmers
- Using scissors or shears
- Gardening
- Manual occupations that involve repetitive twisting
and lifting of the wrist
- Playing musical instruments
The main symptom is pain and tenderness on the outside (tennis) or the inside
(golfers) of the elbow. Treatment for such conditions include the following; - Reduce inflammation & pain
- Activity
modification
- Rehabilitation
- Rest
- Specialist
elbow brace which exerts highly targeted compression over the muscles to porovide relief at the relevant muscle insertion
